about

this album is a selection of songs that were written over the last 12 years. some of these songs were written 12 years ago, others 2, and still others somewhere in between. the album was recorded at the end of 2021 into the beginning of 2022, and for no uncertain reason I did not release it. mostly because I did not want to do the paperwork. well, now I have.

some of the songs are about the normal things songs are about, like love and loss, and other songs are about the other normal things songs are about, like dreams and visions. one of the songs is a poem my friend, Derek Witten, wrote. another one of the songs is a song I wrote and let one of my friends contribute some of the lyrics to, as he was having a particularly hard time in life and I was trying to cheer him up. he has since passed. RIP Troy Terpstra (@troy.the.painter)

regarding the title, the most likes I ever got, the phrase did not originate from me. I was doing coat check at the Vogue Theatre for a St Lucius show, and after the meet and greet a guy dawning all the paraphernalia St Lucius had to offer came to check his coat with me and told me a little about his journey as a writer. to make a long story short, he told me that the most likes he ever got on a post was when he bared it all ("put my balls on the table"). he was a crazy guy. but I liked him. so, this is for you, crazy guy with your balls on the table. I hope you keep getting lots of likes.

my good friends Todd Bjerkness (drums) and Doug Ramsay (bass) helped me to no end with this record, which couldn't have been done without them. I did replace Doug's bass on several tracks, but it was such a long time ago I've forgotten which ones and who the nice fella with the big moustache was who did them! well, water under the bridge... right guys?
just kidding, Erik Nielsen was the man. sorry, Douglas. you will always be the number 1 bassist in my heart, though. well, after Jon Milad. but number 2 is a pretty good spot. if it makes you feel better, you took over for David Nadeau... but maybe I'm just digging myself a hole here.
John Evans is a master. he played pedal steel and banjo and is the star of the record. we met at the Vancouver Folk Festival when he was much too young to hang out with me.
thanks to the string brothers Brian Chan (cello) and Caleb Chan (violin) for the wonderful string arrangements. these guys are incredible talents and a pleasure to work with.
the album sounds so good for these reasons and for two others. the first is Christine Schroeder, she is a dear friend of mine and if John Evans is the star, Christine is the moon. she shines brightly on this record and in my life. my favourite moments of this record are thanks to her.
the final reason is for Tom Dobrzanski at Monarch Studios. from Formula 1 updates, to good and cheap places to eat around town, to vocal and string arrangements, Tom had the moves. he also played the organ and the wurlitzer on the album, along with producing and engineering. thanks, Tom.
of course, thanks also to the interns at Monarch Studios for the hospitality - Lilli, Alec, Aaron and Eva.
